DMYS Owner's Bio

With over 30 years of sailing a total of over 150,000 miles, between the United States, Bermuda and the Caribbean, Doug’s marine background is extensive. It includes 17 offshore passages to or from Bermuda with many more to or from the Caribbean as well. He’s also completed many bluewater races, won the 650-mile Bermuda Race, the prestigious Swan Prix d’Elegance Award and countless other sailing trophies over his long career on and around boats. In addition, he planned, managed and handled all logistics for a 4-year high-level racing campaign for the Swan DAKOTA with her 14-member crew and 10 alternates.

Doug became a licensed captain in 1987 and presently holds a 100-ton USCG Master’s License. He was a professional charter skipper and also managed a fleet of boats for a charter company in the Virgin Islands. He was also a dockmaster for a marina on St. Thomas. He is very experienced in navigating the British and U.S. Virgin Islands and their local customs. He is also quite familiar with all the Leeward Islands.

Doug has taught sailing and offered private instruction and coaching to yacht owners along the Connecticut shore. He has delivered many yachts—both coastal and offshore—throughout the Northeast to or from Florida, Bermuda and the Caribbean. He has been based in Milford since 1984, but has spent time working and living part time in the Virgin Islands where he ran DMYS’ Caribbean chartering operation. He has been back in Connecticut, full time, running DAKOTA MARINE Yacht Services since 2002.

Doug served as president and creative director of a successful design communications corporation for 16 years. He is known around the marine industry as an accomplished sailor, meticulous yacht

manager and a stickler for details on all projects he takes on. He is also a freelance marine writer, with published articles in a variety of sailing-related publications.
