Taking care of a yacht is a time-consuming commitment. Even a small daysailer requires a fair amount of time if it is to be kept in bristol condition, as all yachts should be. A 50-60 footer literally demands a full time crew to keep everything in tip-top shape—the topsides shining, the brightwork glowing and all the marine hardware lubricated and polished. Add the fact that the marine environment is very harsh on all surfaces and finishes found on a boat and it’s understandable why the care and maintenance of a well-found, properly cared for yacht is a never-ending battle.

In reality, on an average 36’ fiberglass boat, the time commitment required for an owner to keep everything up on his/her own would probably average about 8-16 hours per week. And that does not include handling the unexpected repair, replacement or installation of new gear, which also goes with the territory. In addition to the time required, understanding the proper way to maintain a yacht is a  whole other group of skills and expertise that is gained over years of experience. Again, a time-consuming process. Knowing which products or materials are right (or wrong) for a specific job, and how to best repair breakdowns or install new gear isn’t learned without years spent sailing, cruising and working on and around boats. (You’re not using Windex to clean your lexan ports or hatches are you? Hope not.)

So, what are your choices as an owner? You can retire so you’ll have enough time on your hands. Or just maintain things yourself when you get around to it, then pay the boatyard to fix things that fail when the lack of proper maintenance kicks in. At DMYS, we offer an alternative.

We’ll set up a maintenance plan for your yacht and treat her as if she were our own. It can be a simple, inexpensive one, where we handle a few things on a regular schedule. Or, it can be a more comprehensive plan. One where we take care of everything for you, including overseeing and managing major projects and refits, delivering the yacht wherever requested, and even getting her ready to go for a sail or cleaning her up afterward. We’ll research, locate and deal with all the vendors, boatyards, various fabricators, etc. on your behalf. And we’ll very likely save you money in the long run—and loads of time.

In a management or maintenance program, any of the work services we normally offer at DMYS (brightwork, installations, winch service, general maintenance, etc.) will be executed directly by us and our low pricing schedule will be used to set the program rate. Other types of projects will go out for bids and be managed closely by us as part of your package. We’ll negotiate the lowest fee from vendors we consider very capable. We can do all, some, or simply just cleaning her up for you. Call to discuss a customized plan that works best for you.

Doug Ely, owner of DMYS, has spent many years handling the needs of all sized yachts, including simple general maintenance programs to the management and logistics of a full blown, 4-year, Grand Prix-level offshore racing campaign for a 47’ Swan and it’s crew of 14 regulars and 10 alternates. Knowing the ins and outs of the marine industry is as important as knowing the ins and outs of boats. At DMYS, we’ve got both well-covered—at reasonable rates.
