Doug Ely is our principal owner. He is a lifelong sailor and has been working on or around boats for over 40 years. He attained his first 25-ton USCG Captain's License in 1987 and by the mid-90s, after thousands of miles and cumulative time at sea, combined with higher level testing with superior results, he met the requirements to garner a 100-ton USCG Offshore Master's License.

His racing and cruising background is extensive and includes numerous ocean races, yacht deliveries and many blue water passages between various points from New England to or from Bermuda, Florida and/or many islands in the Caribbean. He was a charter skipper in the Virgin Islands in addition to managing a separate fleet of yachts for a small charter company based in St. Thomas. He has raced in international regattas in Newport, St. Martin, Antigua, the British Virgin Islands, St. Thomas and has cruised extensively throughout the West Indies chain from St. Lucia to Puerto Rico.

In 1999, Doug captained the yacht, DAKOTA, a German Frers-designed Swan 46, with a dedicated crew of eight seasoned sailors, to a first place overall finish in the 650-mile Marion/Bermuda Race, sailed out of Buzzard's Bay to St. David's Light, just off St. George's, Bermuda. Additionally, he has brought home silver countless other times, from scores of offshore long-distance and around-the-buoys races.

In 2000, Doug captured the prestigious Prix d'Elegance award for DAKOTA at the American Swan Regatta in Newport, RI. That award represents the best, most well-maintained Swan in the entire fleet of over 50 of the most exquisite Swans from around the world.

Capitalizing on his many accomplishments and successes with DAKOTA, he launched DAKOTA MARINE Yacht Services while exiting the serious racing scene in 2001 to focus on the new business. However, you may still occasionally catch him out racing casually on Long Island Sound with any number of his dedicated local customers.

Other than the 2 1/2 years during which Doug was a charter captain in the Virgin Islands, he has been based in the Milford, CT area since 1984.

In his earlier career, he served as president and creative director of a successful design communications corporation for 17 years. He is known around the marine industry as an accomplished sailor, meticulous yacht manager and a stickler for details on all projects on which he is at the helm.

Doug is also a freelance writer, with published articles in a variety of sailing and boating publications, as well as various internet blogs from inside and outside of the marine industry.

He lives with his wife, Mary Ann and his other beautiful girl, his dog "DAKOTA." (Would you expect her to be named something else?) They live close by, in Oxford, CT
